In France, there are various types of insurance available to individuals, ranging from mandatory to optional policies. Having insurance can be essential in protecting your financial and personal interests in the case of an unforeseen event.

Home insurance in France
Home insurance is compulsory for property owners whose home is located in a condominium as well as for tenants who must take out at least one insurance policy for rental risks such as fire, explosion, or water damage. The insurance for “rental risks” covers only damage caused to the rented property. To cover damages caused to neighbors and your property, you can take out additional insurance policies called “insurance for recourse to neighbors and third parties” and “multirisk home insurance”.

Car insurance in France
Subscribing to a car or motorcycle insurance policy is mandatory when driving a motor vehicle in France. There are three types of coverage available: third-party liability, third-party liability plus fire and theft, and comprehensive coverage. The third-party liability insurance is the minimum legal requirement, covering only the damage caused to a third party in the event of an accident.

Family civil liability insurance in France
Damage caused to others must be repaired legally. Multirisk home insurance policies often include “family civil liability” coverage designed to repair damages caused involuntarily by a family member in their private life to others or their property. The contract usually includes additional guarantees, such as insurance for school or extracurricular activities (limited to the responsibility of the children) or sports liability insurance, but note that many risky sports are excluded.

Other types of insurance policies available in France include health insurance, travel insurance, life insurance, and liability insurance for professionals, among others. It’s important to shop around and compare different policies to find the one that suits your needs and budget.
